Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup participation is in jeopardy after he is forced to withdraw from training

Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup participation is in jeopardy after he is forced to withdraw from training

Cristiano Ronaldo was forced to withdraw from Portugal’s training session just days before the start of the World Cup, causing a major fitness scare.

The Manchester United forward is reportedly suffering from a stomach bug and will miss Wednesday’s training session.

Ronaldo has been in the news this week due to his explosive interview with Piers Morgan, but he is currently in Qatar with the rest of the Portugal national team in preparation for Sunday’s start of the World Cup.

Portugal is scheduled to play Nigeria in a warm-up match on Thursday, but Ronaldo may not play due to illness.

Next Thursday, Fernando Santos’ squad will kick off its Group H campaign against Ghana, before facing Uruguay and South Korea for a spot in the tournament’s round of 16.

Ronaldo’s reported absence coincides with the airing of the first half of his explosive interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV.

Several clips from the 90-minute interview, which Manchester United did not authorize, have gone viral in recent days. The 37-year-old has already claimed that he feels “betrayed” by the club before stating that he lacks “respect” for Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo has also been critical of his former Old Trafford teammates Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney, and has taken aim at the club’s unpopular owners, the Glazer family, in one of the most recent clips shared prior to the full release of the interview on Wednesday and Thursday.

Ronaldo’s illness culminates a tumultuous few days for the veteran forward, who has had awkward interactions with international teammates Bruno Fernandes and Joao Cancelo.

In a clip that quickly went viral earlier this week, it appeared that Manchester United teammate Fernandes snubbed Ronaldo. Since then, Fernandes has downplayed the incident.

Ronaldo’s other Old Trafford teammates do not want him to return to the club following the World Cup, despite rumors of a rift between the two having subsided.

It is believed that their stance is supported by Ten Hag, who has informed the Manchester United hierarchy that Ronaldo cannot play for him again in light of his most recent transgression.
