Cristiano Ronaldo skips training as Portugal dealt triple World Cup injury blow

Cristiano Ronaldo skips training as Portugal dealt triple World Cup injury blow

Cristiano Ronaldo did not participate in Wednesday’s training session for Portugal, while Otavio, Danilo Pereira, and Nuno Mendes were all sidelined due to injury ahead of their final group game against South Korea.

Ronaldo became the first player to score in five different FIFA World Cups when he scored a penalty kick against Ghana in the opening match for Portugal.

The veteran attacker attempted to claim he scored Portugal’s opening goal against Uruguay in their second group game, but it was established that the ball had gone right into the net despite Portugal presenting evidence that the 37-year-old had headed home a cross from Bruno Fernandes.

Portugal have already qualified for the Round of 16 and need only a draw against South Korea in their last group match to move to the next round as group champions. Consequently, significant changes to their starting lineup are anticipated.

They had to work with Paris Saint-Germain wingback Nunes, who sustained a muscle injury in the victory over Uruguay, while his club teammate Danilo missed the session as he continues to heal from fractured ribs incurred in training. Otavio, on the other hand, is not yet totally fit due to a muscle injury he sustained in the opening match against Ghana.

As reported by Marca, Ronaldo was also absent from the training, focusing instead on individual training rather than being put through his paces with the rest of the squad. It is currently unknown whether the unattached forward will be rested for the match against South Korea.

Ronaldo will want to play from the opening whistle, but Portugal head coach Fernando Santos may regard the match as an opportunity to rotate his attacking alternatives. Rafael Leao, Goncalo Ramos, and Matheus Nunes will be among the players vying for a starting position.

Ronaldo has led Portugal’s attack in each of their early group games, with former club teammate Bruno Fernandes serving as a playmaker and Bernardo Silva and Joao Felix playing wider attacking positions.

Following his explosive chat with Piers Morgan, the Portuguese superstar and Manchester United mutually decided to sever their connection last week. He has fully transitioned to international mode and aims to smash many World Cup records.
