Cristiano Ronaldo was the first Portugal player to exit the tunnel at Lusail Stadium following his team’s 6-1 victory over Switzerland.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was benched for the round-of-16 match against Switzerland, but he was brought on as a second-half replacement with Fernando Santos’s team well in command.

Goncalo Ramos, Ronaldo’s replacement, scored a pair of goals, while Pepe and Raphael Guerreiro also scored within the first hour for Portugal.

Manuel Akanji’s goal provided Switzerland with a ray of hope, but Ramos’ hat-trick and the first hat-trick of the 23022 World Cup placed Portugal in command. Then it was time for Ronaldo to enter the fray, and the former Manchester United  player was greeted enthusiastically by the stadium’s spectators.

Ronaldo, who entered the game in the 73rd minute, nearly scored himself, but his attempt was deemed offside. Rafael Leao scored Portugal’s sixth goal in the waning seconds, ensuring the overwhelming victory and setting up Saturday’s quarterfinal against Morocco.

The Portugal team went to celebrate with their fans around the stadium after the game. It was an emotional moment as Portugal qualified for the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2006, and Ronaldo joined the festivities by saluting the traveling Portugal fans.

However, according to BBC Sport, Ronaldo was the first Portugal player to walk down the tunnel after celebrating with his teammates on the field. This is not the first time Ronaldo has left a game early; he did the same thing at Manchester United before leaving the club last month.

In October, the former Real Madrid attacker furiously stormed down the tunnel after refusing to come in as a second-half replacement in United’s Premier League victory over Tottenham.

He did the same against Rayo Vallecano in a preseason friendly, which Erik ten Hag criticized at the time, and he solved the second predicament before Ronaldo returned for the Europa League victory over Sheriff.

However, Ronaldo chose to discuss Ten Hag with Piers Morgan, sending shockwaves around the world. He discussed his experience at Old Trafford in detail and criticized several facets of the club.

Ronaldo criticized Ten Hag and stated he had little regard for the Dutchman before launching attacks against the Glazers and other United leaders. All of this resulted in the Red Devils confirming Ronaldo’s departure 15 months after his return from Juventus. Since then, Ronaldo has been linked to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr.
