Cristiano Ronaldo breaks Ali Daei’s international goalscoring record
Cristiano Ronaldo has broken Ali Daei’s all-time international goalscoring record after notching his 110th and 111th goals for Portugal.
The forward grabbed a tense 88th-minute equaliser in Portugal’s World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland to make history – heading past Gavin Bazunu in the Irish goal.
Deep into second-half stoppage time he then scored the winner, rising high at the back post to nod home Joao Mario’s cross.
Ronaldo had missed a penalty earlier in the match, with Bazunu diving well to his right to palm the ball wide of the post.
The goal caps off what’s been a dream week for CR7 in which he also finalized his fairytale return to former club Manchester United in a settlement worth an initial £12.85m, which could rise to a possible £19.7m transfer fee in bonuses and add-ons.

By re-signing for United, he has also become the highest paid player in Premier League history.
The 36-year-old had equaled Daei’s extraordinary international goalscoring record during Euro 2020, converting a pair of penalties in his nation’s draw with France in the group stages of the tournament – a tournament Ronaldo (obviously) ended as the top scorer.
The international goalscoring record is one of the many Ronaldo has broken throughout his career.
He also boasts the record for most goals in footballing history (although this is contested by Pele), the most goals scored for Real Madrid, the most goals scored in the UEFA Champions League, and the most scored in European Championships.
Ronaldo will now turn his attention to helping Portugal win their next two matches in this international break.
First up they face Qatar in an allurement friendly on Saturday before traveling back to Europe to play Azerbaijan on Tuesday.
