Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani break an 11-year-old record with following Man Utd goal
Manchester United’s second goal came from a combination of Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani, breaking an 11-year-old Premier League and club record in the process.
As Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tweaked his system, the two veteran strikers started up front in north London.
United started with a back five in their 3-0 victory, with Ronaldo and Cavani both scoring.
Ronaldo opened the scoring in the first half with a superb finish before turning provider for the Uruguayan.
Cavani was set free by his through ball and beat Hugo Lloris to double United’s lead.
That goal marked the first time two Manchester United players over the age of 34 had combined since Paul Scholes set up Ryan Giggs against Newcastle in August 2010.
After a difficult week for the club, Marcus Rashford came off the bench to add a third goal, and the forward was pleased with the response.
He told Sky Sports : “It’s obviously been a difficult week, it is for any team when you don’t win. We’ve responded the only way we know how. The staff, the players all want to win.
“Playing for Man Utd there’s always pressure, you have to learn to enjoy it. Part of playing for this club is to come out of difficult moments. this club has always bounced back.
“I think [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s] prepared for the team we’re playing against. We all have to buy into what the manager tells us to do. Today that helped us come away with the three points.
“There’s more to come [from us]. As long as we keep improving, keep picking up points, we’ll see where we are come the end of the season.”
The Liverpool thrashing came after a string of poor results and performances.
As a result, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come under intense scrutiny, with some questioning whether he is the right man to lead Manchester United.
The victory was built on a clean sheet, which has become increasingly rare in recent months.
Solskjaer said: “We’ve built this performance on hard work, discipline and keeping the ball away from our goal. Spaces will open up especially if you get the first goal.
“The first goal always decides how the game goes.
“We’ve got a hard week again. Champions League game then City. We’ve got to digest this one and be ready for Tuesday.”
He added: “The experience of Edinson Cavani and Cristiano is massive. We need it. We can’t hide. The week has been difficult for all the players. They really stuck at it. Exprience counts in situations like this.”
