‘Confirmed…’ – Fabrizio Romano shares Man City departure news; the player annoyed Pep Guardiola
Fabrizio Romano has now verified Pedro Porro’s transfer from Manchester City to Sporting CP.
The 22-year-old joined Man City from Girona for a rumoured cost of £10.8 million in the summer of 2019.
Instead of training with the Sky Blues’ first squad, the right-back was promptly loaned out to Real Valladolid of La Liga.
Porro was loaned out again after spending a season in Spain’s top flight. He joined Sporting CP in Portugal this time, where he has been for over two years.
When Sporting drew City in this year’s Champions League, the player irritated Pep Guardiola by saying that the Spaniard didn’t even know who he is, eliciting a caustic response from the manager.
Romano has confirmed that Sporting have secured Porro on a permanent transfer from City, after activating the £7.2m clause in the loan agreement.
Romano published more facts on Twitter, including an option for Txiki Begiristain to bring the player back for just £16.9 million.
“Official, confirmed. Sporting have now signed Pedro Porro, permanent deal from Man City for €8.5m clause triggered. Contract signed until June 2025.
“Manchester City will have a buy back clause for €20m. Release clause for all the other clubs will be €45m. MCFC”
The highly touted 22-year-old will be an excellent long-term addition to the Portuguese squad.
Porro ranks in the 97th percentile for non-penalty goals as a full-back, and in the 94th percentile for total shots, according to FB Ref.
Thus, this attacking threat would have fit well into Guardiola’s style of play, and possibly City will be able to bring Porro back to Manchester with the application of a cheap buy-back provision if he continues to perform effectively.
Sporting, on the other hand, will have a fantastic player on their hands for the next few years, so this appears to be a win-win situation for both parties.
