Cody Gakpo reveals why he has a hard time talking to Liverpool teammate

Cody Gakpo, who was signed by Liverpool in January, has expressed difficulty communicating with his teammate Curtis Jones due to the latter’s Scouse accent.

The Scouse accent is unique and distinguishable from the accents of nearby regions, having been influenced by immigrants from Wales, Norway, and Ireland who arrived in the city through its ports in the past.

It’s understandable why foreign players may struggle to adapt to this dialect, and Gakpo is no exception. In a recent interview, the Dutch international was asked about his experience with the local accent in Merseyside.

Gakpo replied (h/t @AnfieldWatch):

“[It’s been] difficult. When you speak fast, I cannot understand. Often, to Curtis [Jones], [he’s repeating himself] maybe three times because I cannot understand what he’s saying.”

The Dutch striker faced a tough time adapting to English football after joining Liverpool and was unable to score in his first six games across all competitions for his new team. However, he has since scored four goals in eight matches for the Reds.

On the other hand, Curtis Jones has found it challenging to become a regular starter under manager Jurgen Klopp. The midfielder, who was born in Liverpool, has only played for 189 minutes in the league this season.

Jones and Trent Alexander-Arnold are the only Scousers in Klopp’s senior squad, making them the only players from Liverpool in the team.
