Erik ten Hag, the new manager of Manchester United, is ready to bolster his team with the signing of Christian Eriksen on a free transfer after he turned down the option to stay at Brentford.

Christian Eriksen agreed to join  Manchester United in exchange for a large salary and the chance of additional new arrivals.

The Danish international has agreed to a three-year contract with United on a free transfer and will have a medical within the next 48 hours.

United is finalising the terms of the contract, which will last until 2025 and is expected to be paid roughly £150,000 per week.

On Saturday, Star Sport disclosed that United officials had made a verbal approach to the former Tottenham and Brentford midfielder.

Eriksen will join the United squad, which will fly to Bangkok on Friday to begin the club’s pre-season tour, assuming he passes a stringent medical assessment.

Eriksen returned to English football last season when he signed a season-long loan with Brentford.

Eriksen is thought to have opted to join Erik ten Hag’s side after learning that Frankie de Jong and Tyrell Malacia would be accompanying him to Old Trafford.

Shirt numbers the Danish can take

After being barred from playing in Serie A after being installed with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, the playmaker joined fellow Dane Thomas Frank at the Brentford Community Stadium after being released by Inter.

He has, however, decided to join the Red Devils. SportsDias looks at six possible squad numbers for him to wear at Old Trafford.

No 6

United’s lowest unoccupied squad number is No. 6, which Paul Pogba has worn for the last six seasons.

However, Pogba has already left Old Trafford when his contract expired.

Eriksen could be in with a chance of getting the No 6 shirt if Erik ten Hag assigns him a crucial role.

No 8

Eriksen is the most likely recipient of Juan Mata’s No. 8 shirt, which he wore for nine years at Old Trafford.

During his early career with Ajax, the Danish international wore the No. 8 jersey for four years. And he may be looking for a traditional beginning number.

No 12

Since Chris Smalling left United to join Roma in 2020, the No. 12 jersey has been available.

If United acquire Frenkie de Jong and he wears the No. 8, Eriksen might be handed the No. 12 as a compromise.

No 14

With Jesse Lingard’s departure, there is presently no one donning the No 14 shirt at Old Trafford.

It’s hardly the most glamorous number, with only a few celebrities donning it in the past. As a result, Eriksen may opt to take a higher number that means something to him.

No 21

Eriksen wore the No 21 shirt for Brentford last season. And the ace could request to keep the same number at Old Trafford as a gesture to the chance he was given by the west Londoners to return to the Premier League.

With the number becoming available following Edinson Cavani’s departure, the ex-Inter player could take it if he doesn’t obtain the No. 8.

No 23

Eriksen notably wore the No. 23 shirt for every season he spent at Tottenham, where he scored and assisted numerous goals.

As a result, the number will obviously mean a lot to him. That shirt is now worn by Luke Shaw, but if Eriksen is desperate enough, he may be able to twist the England left-arm back’s and seize it.
