In the coming months or even years, there will be a growing number of speculations about European games being played outside of Europe.

With American owners like Todd Boehly and Company, Fenway Sports Group, and the Kroenke’s already at the helm of some of England’s top clubs, playing in the United States appears to be more of a certainty than a possibility.

Clearly, money is the fundamental motivation for playing European games outside of Europe.

European football fans are likely less enthusiastic about the proposal, but there is no doubt that it will be beneficial for sport’s regulatory organizations.

According to the Athletic, the Middle East, China, and the United States are the major “outside Europe” destinations that will give the type of revenue the major clubs will be seeking.

As the first two options are controversial, the third option is the most likely.

This option has recently increased the amount of money it is willing to pay to broadcast/stream Champions League games by 150 percent and will host the majority of games at the 2026 World Cup, which is expected to break records for audience size, revenues, and profits.

In light of this, when UEFA and the European Club Association (ECA) inevitably accept the notion that games may be played in the United States, how could this be implemented? Well, there are a few hypotheses.

One possibility is to relocate one or two Champions League group stage games to a city that will honor the event. A location such as Los Angeles, New York, etc., where the entire world will be watching.

Some NFL teams yearly go to England to play league games, with Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Wembley Stadium hosting this season’s contests.

UEFA president Aleksandr Ceferin began this notion last year when he told L’Equipe that he was “a fan” of how it may unfold: stage two single-leg semi-finals and a final in a Champions League “final four” week outside of Europe.

This is comparable to how the Champions League and Europa League operated after they were suspended during the peak of the coronavirus outbreak.

UEFA eliminated the home/away format of the quarterfinals and semi-finals, concluding the Champions League in Portugal and the Europa League in Germany over the course of 12 days.

The Athletic adds that player feedback was encouraging because they did not have to travel as frequently. A “final four” competition will also benefit broadcasters and is likely to be supported by football’s elite.

Those who follow these clubs on a week-to-week basis will, of course, oppose the proposal.

But with the money surrounding the game today, it’s definitely something we’ll have to get used to in the long run, especially if more non-Europeans like Boehly take control of the world’s greatest teams and introduce new methods of distributing wealth.
