Chelsea’s dangerous XI under Luis Enrique if Todd Boehly gives him three new recruits
The likelihood of Luis Enrique becoming the next Chelsea manager improved on Wednesday, when he reportedly arrived in London to continue discussions with the club.
With co-owner Todd Boehly and the rest of the Blues’ recruitment team reportedly impressed by what they’ve heard so far, SportsDias takes you through what Chelsea’s formidable lineup could look like if Luis Enrique is backed by three new signings this summer…
(4-3-3): Goalkeeper – Raya
Although Kepa Arrizabalaga has performed admirably since displacing Edouard Mendy to regain his starting position, the general consensus is that Chelsea still requires a world-class goalkeeper to elevate their performance.
David Raya is untested at the elite level, but he has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most exciting goalkeepers, and Enrique should appreciate his ability in possession. With just over a year remaining on his contract, it is widely anticipated that the Spaniard will depart Brentford in the summer, after admitting to rejecting two new deals.
Defence – James, Fofana, Silva, Chilwell
If Enrique is hired, he may not have to make many changes to Chelsea’s defense due to the club’s massive investment in its defensive unit. Despite the Blues’ poor overall form, Reece James and Ben Chilwell could be the most exciting full-back pairing in the division.
Next season, the contrast of youth and experience between Wesley Fofana and Thiago Silva could prove to be a productive pairing. While there are numerous options in central defense, including the exciting prospect Benoit Badiashile, the partnership between Wesley Fofana and Thiago Silva could prove to be productive.
Midfield – Fernandez, Rice, Kante
Since returning from injury this month, N’Golo Kante has been a breath of fresh air, and he is widely expected to sign a contract extension before the end of the season. Enzo Fernandez, who commanded a British transfer record fee in January, is also likely to retain his starting position after making a favorable impression since joining Benfica.
West Ham captain Declan Rice could provide Chelsea with a steadying presence to anchor the midfield if Chelsea is willing to meet the Hammers’ £100 million asking price. Enrique would also have a variety of attacking options available on the bench, including Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Conor Gallagher, and Carney Chukwuemeka.
Attack – Sterling, Osimhen, Mudryk
Having conceded 29 goals in 29 Premier League matches this season, Chelsea’s attack is unquestionably the area that requires the most improvement. The primary issue has been a lack of effectiveness in the middle, with Kai Havertz falling short of expectations.
Although Armando Broja is expected to return for the upcoming season, Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is likely to be the Blues’ top transfer target after his dominant season with the Italian club. The Nigerian has already admitted his desire to play in the Premier League, and Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing him.
Even though fans have yet to witness the duo at their peak, Raheem Sterling and Mykhaylo Mudryk should be Enrique’s primary wingers when performing at their peak.
