Chelsea summer transfers: Possible starting XI for 2022/2023 season

Overall, Chelsea’s 2021/22 season was a letdown, with off-field upheaval compounded by defeats in both domestic cup finals.

With new owner Todd Boehly in place, the Blues will be looking for bigger and better things following this summer.

However, their squad is currently in need of severe surgery. Fortunately, there is still time to rectify it.

Here’s how Thomas Tuchel might start next season.

Chelsea 2022/2023 goalkeepers

Aside from a few gaffes, Edouard Mendy had another good season and will begin the 2022/23 season as the unquestioned first choice at Stamford Bridge.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, the most expensive goalkeeper in history, is a long-term Newcastle United objective, but the Magpies are also considering signing Dean Henderson from Manchester United, so he may stay.

Marcus Bettinelli, if anyone is interested, has one year left on his contract as well.

Chelsea 2022/2023 defenders

Chelsea have sleep-walked into a defensive problem that must be solved this summer.

Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have joined Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively, and might be joined in La Liga next season by fellow Blaugrana target Cesar Azpilicueta.

Thankfully, Thiago Silva and the ever-improving Trevoh Chalobah will remain.

Chelsea will continue to improve at the back, with Jules Kounde a major target and RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol also on the radar.

Levi Colwill, who impressed on loan at Huddersfield last season, should also be looking for a first-team spot. Remember Ethan Ampadu, who spent the campaign with Venezia.

Reece James and Ben Chilwell will fill the two full-back positions, but further depth on both sides may be necessary if Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso – another player garnering considerable interest from Barcelona – depart the club.

After a successful season with Lyon, Emerson should be welcomed back into the fold. If necessary, Kenedy can also play as a left wing-back.

Chelsea 2022/2023 midfielders

N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are both out of contract in the summer of 2023, and Chelsea are content to let the latter go rather than renewing both of their contracts.

A return to Italy appears to be the most likely option.

Mateo Kovacic was the Blues’ best midfielder at the end of the season and will be one of the first names on the squad sheet.

Conor Gallagher, Crystal Palace’s player of the season, should and should join him alongside Kante in the midfield.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, another former Palace loanee, appeared to earn a starting berth at times last season, although he remains linked with a move away from west London.

Billy Gilmour will almost certainly be loaned out again, but Saul Niguez’s chances of returning permanently are slim. Declan Rice of West Ham is a long shot to make the team.

Chelsea 2022/2023 forwards

Chelsea must make numerous important options in the forward position.

They appear to be prepared to cut their losses on Romelu Lukaku after just one season, with the player willing to accept a pay reduction in order to return to Inter.

Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner have been linked with moves away again, but Chelsea will be concerned with more than simply outgoings.

They are hopeful of bringing in Ousmane Dembele on a free transfer, while free-scoring Christopher Nkunku has also been linked with a move.

If the Blues believe Kai Havertz is insufficient as a starting center-forward, Lautaro Martinez is another option.

Armando Broja is returning to Stamford Bridge after a loan spell at Southampton, but another loan exit appears likely.

Chelsea 2022/2023 potential starting XI

Goalkeeper: Edouard Mendy (GK)

Defenders: Reece James (RB), Jules Kounde (CB), Thiago Silva (CB), Ben Chilwell (LB)

Midfield: Mateo Kovacic (CM), N’Golo Kante (CM), Conor Gallagher (CM)

Attack: Ousmane Dembele (RW), Kai Havertz (ST), Mason Mount (LW)
