Chelsea suffer huge injury blow ahead of Club World Cup during Plymouth encounter

Mason Mount hobbled off against Plymouth Argyle with an injury, which could be a major concern for Chelsea ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.

The Blues midfielder started the match against the League One side at Stamford Bridge before being substituted in the 96th minute of the fourth-round tie, which had gone to extra time.

Saul Niguez, another midfielder, eventually took his place.

The scores were level at the time of Mount’s substitution, after Macaulay Gillesphey and Cesar Azpilicueta had exchanged first-half goals.

However, his absence had no effect on Thomas Tuchel’s team, who managed to take the lead during the first half of extra time, thanks to Marcos Alonso’s goal.

While the Blues will be overjoyed with their victory and subsequent place in the fifth round of the FA Cup, Mount’s availability will be the first immediate concern.

Chelsea’s absence could be a significant blow, as the current European champions are scheduled to fly to Abu Dhabi after the game for the Club World Cup.

With seven goals and seven assists in all competitions so far this season, the academy graduate has once again been a key player for the Blues.

An extended layoff would be another bitter pill to swallow for Chelsea, which has already lost manager Thomas Tuchel. The German tested positive for Covid-19 and was absent against Plymouth.

He is also likely to miss the Blues’ Club World Cup semi-final, as quarantine rules keep him in the UK until at least Wednesday.
