Chelsea squad for 2022/23 season: Confirmed shirt numbers for The Blues, FIVE Players without squad numbers heading into new season

Chelsea will experience a lot of change this summer, with big-name outgoings and additions predicted in equal measure.

Defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have both left the club at the conclusion of their contracts, while Romelu Lukaku has returned to Inter on a season-long loan, freeing up the ‘cursed’ number nine shirt.

Loanee Saul Niguez has also returned to Atletico Madrid after a largely fruitless stint in west London.

That means there will be a significant change in squad numbers as some are released and others are taken.

Here are Chelsea’s roster numbers for the 2022/23 season as of now…

Numbers that can Premier League players can wear

Premier League players can wear any number between one and 99 as long as it is unique within their squad, though history dictates that first-teamers normally wear one to approximately 30 – with a few exceptions.

With the number 76 shirt, former Manchester City midfielder Manu Garcia and Liverpool’s Neco Williams hold the record for the highest shirt number in Premier League history.

Goalkeepers will typically be numbered one and thirteen, again following tradition.

Premier League players are not permitted to wear the number zero, which is understandable given the absurdity of the situation.

Can Premier League players change squad numbers?

Premier League players can change their squad number only during pre-season or if they are transferred or loaned to another club during the January transfer window.

Each year, clubs must submit their confirmed squad list, including shirt numbers, by a specific time, and numbers cannot be changed after that. The deadline in 2021 was September 1.
