Chelsea sources confirm Manchester City interest in first-team player
According to sources within the club, a recent report has confirmed Manchester City’s interest in Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell.
The current Premier League champions are looking to acquire a new left-back during the upcoming summer transfer window, as they have faced difficulties in this position for several years.
As a result, head coach Pep Guardiola has had to rely on various squad members to fill the role, including Fabian Delph, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Joao Cancelo, Sergio Gomez, and most recently Bernardo Silva, since joining Manchester City in 2016.
Although Nathan Ake has performed well in the left-back position for Manchester City lately, helping the team in their pursuit of a third consecutive Premier League title, the club is still planning to sign a new left-back during the upcoming transfer window.
Their search has now led them to a familiar Premier League rival, indicating that they are determined to find a solution to their long-standing left-back problem.
The Athletic has released a new report stating that “sources within the club,” who have spoken anonymously to maintain their relationships, have confirmed Manchester City’s sincere interest in Ben Chilwell. The report suggests that the club is actively pursuing the Chelsea defender as a solution to their long-standing left-back issue.
The Athletic’s report also states that Manchester City officials may face disappointment in their efforts to sign Chilwell in the upcoming months as the England international is content with his current situation at Stamford Bridge.
The report notes that Chilwell is settled living near Chelsea’s training ground and is happy at the club.
Manchester City has reportedly been interested in Chilwell since his time at Leicester City, and the club believes that they may have signed him already had Chelsea not activated his release clause in 2020.
Although the fee that Chelsea paid to sign Chilwell is undisclosed, it is believed by some sources to be around £45 million.
If Potter decides to sell him to Manchester City during the upcoming summer transfer window, it is expected that Chelsea would receive a significant profit, given the Manchester club’s urgent need for a left-back and the intense rivalry between the two clubs for domestic titles.
