Chelsea set for a cash windfall if Madrid wins the Champions League final vs Liverpool
Chelsea will be hopeful that Real Madrid defeats Liverpool in the Champions League final and provides them with a large cash injection.
The freshly crowned La Liga winners completed a spectacular week by defeating Manchester City 3-2 in extra time to seal their spot in the Champions League final.
Karim Benzema’s penalty was decisive as the 13-time champions advanced 6-5 on aggregate.
Madrid is now aiming for a 14th title, but they must first defeat Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the showpiece final in Paris later this month.
The Spanish giants will not be the only ones praying for a lucky 14 result, as a win for Carlo Ancelotti’s men would provide Chelsea with a big profit.
A condition contained in the deal that brought Eden Hazard from Chelsea to Real Madrid in 2019 included an additional financial payment if Los Blancos won the Champions League with Hazard at the club.
Real Madrid made an initial cash payment of £88 million with the Blues for the Belgian international’s services, with additional potential payments bringing the total to a stunning £130 million.
Hazard has had an injury-plagued tenure in the Spanish city and is presently out with a season-ending ankle injury sustained in March.
His last appearance for Madrid was on February 19 against Alaves, and he has only one goal this season, which came in a Copa del Rey match at Elche.
Despite making only 22 games in all competitions this season, three of them were in the Champions League, therefore he would be eligible for a winner’s medal if Madrid defeated Liverpool.
Chelsea will be hopeful that Roman Abramovich’s sale of the club is completed in time for the final.
If the club is successfully sold, the present government sanctions against it will be repealed, allowing the Blues to reclaim any overdue payments.
