Chelsea receive Romelu Lukaku injury boost as striker’s agent provides new update
Chelsea were left strangely deflated despite a 4-0 triumph over Swedish side Malmo on Wednesday night.
During the thrashing, both Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner were struck down with injuries which is set to leave Thomas Tuchel thin on the ground up top over the coming weeks.
Despite losing both forwards in the first half, the Blues put together a 4-0 thrashing of Malmo at Stamford Bridge. It was an important three points to collect given they lost 1-0 to Juventus last time out.
Andreas Christensen, Kai Havertz and two Jorginho penalties gave Chelsea triumph, but the points unquestionably came at a cost when examining what they are likely to miss over the next few games.
Tuchel stated after the game that Lukaku would be ‘out for a while’ due to a twisted ankle.
More promisingly, however, Lukaku’s agent Federico Pastorello told Sky Sports News:
“The fact he was down for four minutes, I was with Petr Cech and I told him while watching the game that it was something I was scared about because he isn’t one to make a fake scene.
“He was very sad actually yesterday as a first reaction but everybody was seeing he was playing a good game and I am 100 per cent sure he would have scored goals [had he stayed on].
“He was on fire but he is really concentrated and will be focused on his recovery as soon as possible.
“He has his physio at home so he is working hard every evening even before he goes to sleep so if there is a time to come back it will be earlier than planned.”
Even if he only plays a few games, Lukaku would be a huge loss following his £98 million summer move from Inter Milan.
The transfer was prompted by Werner’s poor debut season in front of goal, but after the German was also injured against Malmo, others will be tasked with carrying the goals burden.
Kai Havertz played through the middle for the club in spells last season, and while the 22-year-old will be under pressure to perform, his £71 million price tag reflects the club’s opinion of his potential.
Fortunately for the Blues, they have a somewhat favorable stretch of games ahead of them.
They play bottom-of-the-table Norwich City next, but Tuchel and co. will undoubtedly hope for a quick recovery when things get tougher in a few weeks.
If Pastorello’s assessment is correct, the prolific Belgian could be back in time for a daunting three-match series against Leicester City, Juventus, and Manchester United in November.
