Chelsea ready Robert Lewandowski swoop as Thomas Tuchel informs Todd Boehly transfer demands
The 33-year-old has been strongly linked with a transfer away from Bayern Munich this summer, and while rumours suggest that the Catalan club is his first destination, the Blues are considering a move, according to the Guardian.
This season, the Poland international appeared 34 times for the German giants in the Bundesliga, directly contributing to 39 goals.
Despite his age, Lewandowski’s strong performances led Bayern to a ninth consecutive title, drawing interest from a slew of top European clubs.
His contract at the Allianz Arena expires at the end of next season, raising questions about his future in Germany. So, thinking of his future, Lewandowski addressed the rumours tying him to a transfer after Bayern’s draw.
Last month, the Polish talisman said: “It is very likely that this is my last match with Bayern. I can’t say 100%, but maybe it was. We want to find the best solution for me and the club.”
Romelu Lukaku’s lacklustre return to Chelsea has placed doubt on his future, with various additional factors contributing to the striker’s departure, including the controversial interview he gave to Sky Italia, his agent pushing for a move, and a seven-touch performance against Crystal Palace.
Overall, the 28-year-old has struggled to adjust to life in the Premier League after returning to Stamford Bridge from Inter Milan in the summer.
He has only scored 17 goals in 44 games this season, and his inability to find the net has pushed him to the bench.
And, according to the Guardian, Thomas Tuchel is keen to bolster his strike force next season, but it is believed that the Belgian’s future must be sorted first in order for the Blues to sign Lewandowski.
In terms of areas for development for the Blues next season, the German manager stated, “If we stick to the group then we will try to solve it with these players. Is it necessary to bring more offensive players around the box to create more distractions, to create more space for each other? We will ask that question.
“Can we do better in the structure? Can we push the players more? Did we rotate too much? Let’s see. There are a lot of options.
“The numbers we produce from our offensive players don’t allow us to overperform and we need overperformance if we want to be nearer to the top two teams.
“I am not pointing fingers, I am not blaming anybody, but we need overperformance from everybody. It’s not overperformance if we have only single figures in scoring and assisting.”
