Chelsea reaches agreement with Leicester for Wesley Fofana as Todd Boehly strikes world-record deal

Chelsea and Leicester City have agreed a deal for Wesley Fofana, which could see the defender become the world’s most expensive center-back.

The Blues have been in talks with the Foxes about a move for the 21-year-old for the past month and have had three previous offers for the France Under-21 international rejected.

Chelsea countered with a fourth bid worth a guaranteed £70 million plus additional add-ons that would push the transfer above the £80 million paid by Manchester United for Harry Maguire in 20219. Leicester accepted the offer last night.

Over the last ten days, Fofana has done everything possible to ensure that the two clubs agree on a move to Stamford Bridge.

Brendan Rodgers sent him to train with Leicester’s Under-21s after he failed to show up for a day of training earlier this week.

“He’s not training with the first team,” Rodgers explained. “He’s training with the Under-21s so he can get his football fitness and keep working. It’s so important at this stage to control any sort of distractions that may be there. I can only pick players who give that full commitment to play for the first team. If not, he trains with the Under-21s.”

Rodgers publicly stated when Chelsea first registered their interest in Fofana that the centre-back was not for sale. However, that stance quickly changed, and Chelsea were privately encouraged that a deal could be reached.

Leicester remained steadfast in their desire for a world-record fee for the defender, and the Foxes are hopeful that the package offered by Chelsea will outstrip the amount received for Maguire in the coming years.
