Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku is reportedly willing to accept a 50% pay reduction in order to return to Inter Milan in the summer.

The Belgian has struggled at Stamford Bridge since joining from the Italian club last summer.

According to Nicolo Schira, an Italian transfer analyst, Lukaku is keen to return to Inter Milan and is willing to cut his current salary in half to do so.

However, Schira thinks that the only option for the Belgian to return to his previous club is for Chelsea to sanction a sale or loan agreement in the summer.

In midweek, the Blues will meet with the striker’s representatives to see if a solution can be achieved.

Lukaku joined Chelsea from Inter Milan in a reported £97.5 million transfer last summer.

However, the Belgian struggled for the Blues throughout the 2021-22 season, scoring only 15 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions.

Back in December, the striker publicly expressed his desire to return to his previous club, and it now appears like his wish may be granted.

Earlier this month, Blues manager Thomas Tuchel emphasised the importance of Lukaku to his team and expressed his wish for the striker to stay.

Lukaku’s performances improved towards the end of the 2021-22 season, as he helped Chelsea finish third in the Premier League.

Tuchel made certain that the striker’s efforts were not overlooked and lavished praise on him. He said,

“I want him to be an important part of the squad, right now he is very important. There is no recruitment and no players are about to leave because it’s simply not possible. We need to adapt all the time, to contractual situations and also individual situations, what we and the players want. We signed a big player, he is a big player.”
