Barcelona and Chelsea were two clubs that did a great deal of business together and against each other, but the upcoming transfer windows could be even more dramatic.

Whether it was Marcos Alonso, Cesar Azpilicueta, Raphinha, Jules Kounde, or Ousmane Dembele, the Catalan giants typically prevailed over the Blues, with the exception of Azpilicueta, who agreed to remain at Stamford Bridge until at least the 2022/23 season.

Nevertheless, Barcelona got what they wanted overall, whereas the west Londoners under interim sporting director Todd Boehly were forced to restructure their plans after certain targets were taken or ultimately retained by Barca.

However, in the case of Frenkie de Jong, both Chelsea and Barcelona lost out in the end.

In order to comply with strict La Liga regulations, Barcelona wanted to remove his salary from the club’s payroll.

Both Manchester United and Chelsea missed out on a key midfield target as a result.

While Manchester United failed to acquire a new midfielder before the transfer deadline, their Premier League rivals signed Denis Zakaria on loan to compensate for missing out on the £70 million signing.

With N’Golo Kanté and Jorginho’s contracts set to expire in the upcoming summer, new midfield recruits will be required, which brings De Jong back into the discussion.

It is uncertain whether Chelsea will make another bid for Barca’s number 21. Perhaps a move for Declan Rice could materialise, especially if West Ham are relegated following a terrible start to the 2022/23 season under David Moyes.

Regardless of the outcome, one Chelsea player has indirectly attempted to improve the relationship with De Jong in anticipation of potential new negotiations in the coming months.

Luis Rojo, a Spanish journalist, reports that Jorginho offered himself to Barcelona a few days ago, but the club is not currently considering his signing.

Whether or not Barcelona makes a U-turn on Jorginho remains to be seen, but if certain events transpire, those negotiations could be the deciding factor in the 25-year-old De Jong joining Chelsea.
