Chelsea nightmare and dream Group stage Champions League draw scenario

Chelsea will learn who they will face in the group stages of the Champions League this season when the draw for the group stages takes place on Thursday afternoon.

After finishing third in the Premier League last season, the Blues qualified for this season’s competition, and Express Sport looks at their ideal and worst-case scenarios.

Chelsea Champions League group stage dream scenario

– Porto, RB Salzburg, Viktoria Plzen

Chelsea are drawn in Pot 2 and will face one team from each of the other three pots.

In their ideal scenario, they would face Porto, RB Salzburg, and Viktoria Plzen. Porto qualified for the Champions League after winning the Portuguese league the previous season.

Chelsea, on the other hand, knocked them out of the competition in the quarter-finals two seasons ago before going on to win the trophy.

As a result, manager Thomas Tuchel would be confident of defeating them both at home and away.

Meanwhile, RB Salzburg is back in the Champions League after winning the Austrian league by a landslide last season.

Last season, Erling Haaland’s former club reached the last 16 of the European Cup, but were eliminated by Bayern Munich after losing the second leg 7-1 in Germany.

In other news, Viktoria Plzen of the Czech Republic has never progressed beyond the group stages of the Champions League in their three appearances in the competition.

They narrowly missed out on a place in the knockout rounds the last time they qualified four years ago, finishing two points behind group runners-up Roma.

If the two are drawn together, Chelsea should have far too much for Plzen.

Chelsea Champions League group stage nightmare scenario

 – Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Celtic

The Blues could be dealt a nightmare scenario in which they must compete just to make the last 16.

Tuchel would be wary of Real Madrid, who defeated Liverpool in last season’s final, after the Spanish giants knocked the Blues out on their way to the title last season.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund will be vying to advance to the knockout stages of the competition, proving that they are still a force to be reckoned with after losing Haaland to Manchester City this season.

They would undoubtedly be a dangerous foe.

And matches against Celtic would be difficult as well. The Scottish champions would have to be at their best if they were to face the west Londoners, with the outcome at Celtic Park up in the air.

Tuchel will be hoping that the nightmare group does not become a reality when the draw takes place in Istanbul at 5 p.m. (BST).
