Chelsea new arrival to join on 1 February after deal is struck

Chelsea new arrival to join on 1 February after deal is struck

Joe Shields will begin his recruitment duties at Chelsea in February, according to Football Insider sources.

In October, the Premier League giants announced Shields’ nomination to the newly-created role of co-director of recruitment and talent at Stamford Bridge, but stated that discussions regarding his arrival date were ongoing.

Football Insider has revealed that Chelsea and Southampton have agreed that the highly rated talent scout will join Chelsea on 1 February once the January transfer window closes.

While Shields fulfills his commitments at Southampton, the Blues have been obliged to wait for him to begin working.

Under new owner Todd Boehly, Chelsea are entirely restructuring their recruitment system and have already hired former Brighton head of recruitment Paul Winstanley as director of global talent and transfers.

In addition, they are negotiating the hiring of a technical director to manage all elements of the club’s football operation.

Shields was sought by Chelsea only four months after his transfer from Manchester City to Southampton.

He spent nine years at the Etihad working in City’s scouting and recruitment department, where he developed a solid reputation for signing youth-team players who advanced to the main squad and made high fees.

The veteran scout has also held comparable positions at Crystal Palace and Fulham.

However, his departure enraged Southampton, who were furious with how Chelsea approached the situation.
