Chelsea launch a cruel last-minute hijack of United’s €80m transfer target – report

Despite various behind-the-scenes moves that piqued fans’ interest, Manchester United’s transfer transactions have been slow and arduous thus far.

Although new manager Erik ten Hag has informed the board of the players he wishes to have at his disposal, the club has been dragging its feet on the sale of Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, which has been underway for more than a month.

Following a catastrophic Premier League season, the team needed to reinforce in a variety of positions, notably attack.

Antony, an Ajax winger, was identified as the key target, with club officials meeting with the player’s representation a few weeks ago.

But, while United is still working on the De Jong deal, Chelsea has jumped in and is attempting to hijack the deal for the Brazil international.

Chelsea, according to 90min, have lately held conversations with the winger’s entourage.

Under new ownership, the Blues have given Thomas Tuchel a sizable budget to invest on players.

The London club is trying to acquire striking reinforcements, with Ousmane Dembele of Barcelona and Raheem Sterling of Manchester City among their objectives.

Ten Hag is a big fan of the former Sao Paulo attacker, who he signed for £13 million from Brazil in February 2020.

And during his time in the Eredivisie, the Brazilian has thrived, winning back-to-back league titles as well as the Dutch Cup.

Last season, he was an outstanding performer, scoring 12 goals and assisting on another ten in 32 games.

He was so important that Ten Hag stated that Ajax does not have a substitute for the talented winger.

Ajax have set a high price for the 22-year-old in order to deter possible suitors.

They are aware of the rising interest in their star asset and are reportedly seeking for up to £68 million.

According to multiple sources, the player has begged the club to let him depart because he wants a fresh challenge.

Antony had remarked at the time of Ten Hag’s departure to Manchester that he is ready to assist his manager if he receives the call in the future, implying a future collaboration.

Antony was absent from Ajax’s pre-season training camp, despite not being part with the national team, adding fuel to the fire.

It’s unknown whether the Brazilian will try to get a move to the Premier League.

Given the dearth of firepower up top, United fans are eager to see Antony.

However, if United continues to focus solely on one deal at a time, the Blues may be able to sneak in and steal him right under United’s nose.

This will irritate fans, who are already keen for new signings.
