Chelsea latest news: Wesley Fofana to Stamford Bridge: Leicester transfer U-turn, Harry Maguire message, £20m back-up alternative

Chelsea’s pursuit of Leicester City center-back Wesley Fofana has reached a critical point in time, with only nine days left in the summer transfer window.

The player appears to be trying to force the move, but big money will need to change hands for the Blues to get their man before September 1.

Thanks to the arrivals of Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella, Chelsea’s search for defensive reinforcements isn’t as desperate as it was a few weeks ago.

Nonetheless, manager Thomas Tuchel would welcome another body at the back, and Fofana, despite his youth, has the ability to make an immediate impact.

Leicester is said to have rejected two bids in an attempt to keep Chelsea away.

But, led by new co-owner Todd Boehly, the west London club have been hesitant to cave in and are expected to make one last attempt to persuade the Foxes to do business.

With so much to unpack in one of the summer’s defining sagas, We walk you through three of the most crucial storylines surrounding the transaction.

£20m back-up option

Despite Chelsea’s insistence, it is not a case of Fofana or bust, as Tuchel and Boehly are said to have prepared a list of backup plans in case the move falls through.

According to The Daily Mail, Brighton centre-back Adam Webster is one of them, having impressed since his £20 million move from Bristol City in 2019.

It remains to be seen whether the Seagulls will sell another key player this summer, with Marc Cucurella already settling in at Stamford Bridge after leaving the Amex.

Webster, who stands 6ft 3in tall, is a physical presence who can also carry the ball out from the back and break the lines.

Leicester transfer U-turn

When asked about the possibility of Fofana leaving a few weeks ago, Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers was vehemently opposed.

Who would blame him? James Maddison and Youri Tielemans have also been linked elsewhere, and the Foxes have yet to sign any new players.

Leicester, however, has changed their tune, according to CBS Sports. Talks between Rodgers and Fofana have reportedly failed, and there is speculation that Chelsea could sign the star for less than the current world-record fee of £80 million set by Harry Maguire in 2019.

Harry Maguire message

When discussing the nature of Fofana’s current situation, Rodgers was quick to bring up Maguire’s move to Manchester United.

The Northern Irishman suggested that his sulking defender, who was spotted in the stands on Saturday after asking to be left out of the squad against Southampton, could take a page from Maguire’s book.

“I know football and how it works,” he said. “It’s an amazing profession. It’s a business for clubs, for players it’s a dream. They’re trying to fulfil their dreams. So I understand it for both, it’s why I provide the bridge in terms of trying to advise him what’s the best way to behave.

“That’s why I have always spoken so well of Harry Maguire, because of how he was when he was here at the time when he went for a world-record fee for a defender. I’ve been in these situations before so you manage it how you see fit and my experience helps in these moments.”
