Chelsea handed Erling Haaland lifeline courtesy of Dortmund transfer chief
Chelsea have been granted a boost regarding their hunt of Erling Haaland this summer, in a transfer story which has been laden with twists and turns.
Borussia Dortmund’s transfer advisor, Matthias Sammer, has once again suggested that the club are open to a sale, although naturally, his signature will come at a price.
Dortmund have already lost Jadon Sancho this summer, who validated his £73million transfer to Man Utd last week.
BVB have answered by completing the signing of Donyell Malen from PSV, although they would probably need another target in the pipeline before letting go of Haaland.
When questioned on his future, Sammer said: “I think he will stay, but you never know if a madman would pay €200m [£170m].”
Transfer insider Jan Aage Fjortoft added to this by claiming: “Dortmund will sell if/when they get a crazy offer.”
Indeed, Dortmund have built their current progress on a foundation of buying low, and not just selling high, but selling regularly.
Having paid less than £20m to sign Haaland 18 months ago, recouping that kind of large transfer fee would mark possibly their best signing of all time.
Although the balance sheet would look healthy if the Norwegian departed, it would once again mean selling two established stars for stars in the making.
That is the kind of venture that BVB have taken time and time again, although Haaland’s 41-goal campaign last time out catapulted him to mega-star status, meaning his departure would be tough to take.
Chelsea reportedly sought their luck earlier this summer with a player-plus-cash offer involving Tammy Abraham.
In response, Dortmund declined to budge, while the general lack of development since had hinted that the Blues were not keen to attempt a cash-only deal.
However, the latest statement from Sammer will once again remind Chelsea that they are one humongous bid away from landing a generational talent.
It could also be a now or never chance for Thomas Tuchel’s side, given that the player’s £65m release clause becomes active next summer.
At that point, virtually every top club in Europe is anticipated to match Chelsea’s interest, leaving the Blues with a drastically reduced uncertainty of landing their man.
Although the quoted price is huge, Dortmund have once again outlined their position – the German side are open to a sale, but when it comes to a talent like Haaland, Chelsea would have to pay the price.
