Chelsea fans perplexed by the club’s unusual timing in announcing Todd Boehly’s club acquisition
Chelsea supporters have been perplexed by the club’s strange timing in announcing Todd Boehly’s agreement to buy the club for £4.25 billion.
The Raine Group, the American bank in charge of the sale, has identified Boehly’s group as the preferred bidder to take control at Stamford Bridge.
He’s collaborated with Mark Walter, a fellow Dodgers owner, Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss, and investment firm Clearlake Capital.
Boehly beat over consortiums led by Stephen Pagliuca and Sir Martin Broughton, as well as a late £4.25 billion bid from Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Britain’s richest man.
With only UK Government and Premier League consent required, the Blues moved to their official website in the early hours of Saturday morning to disclose the historic news – but the decision to do so at 1:37am left many puzzled.
One supporter wrote: ‘Chelsea announcing the sale of the club at 1:30am on a Saturday sure is a thing.’
Another questioned: ‘So why was the sale of Chelsea announced at 2 am London time?’
One Chelsea supporter speculated that the timing was due to the club’s new American ties.
They wrote: ‘Club statement at 1:37 – welcome, Chelsea, to America.’

While many Chelsea fans were perplexed by the timing, others took the opportunity to congratulate Roman Abramovich for everything he has done for the club during his 19-year tenure.
When being sanctioned by the UK Government on March 10 after Downing Street claimed to have shown links between the Russian tycoon and Vladimir Putin, who had invaded Ukraine, Abramovich put Chelsea up for sale on March 2 after he was sanctioned by the UK Government.

Despite this, Chelsea supporters praised the Russian billionaire for allowing the deal to go through and opened the path for others to assist the club in its success.
One fan wrote: ‘Thank you Roman for allowing this easy sale to take place, making sure the future of the team is safe with the terms you put and paving the way for new owners to be successful from day one. Excited for this new era of Chelsea.’
Another simply put ‘thank you’ followed by a number of pictures of Abramovich and the trophies Chelsea had won under his regime.
