Chelsea could steal Frenkie de Jong from under Manchester United’s noses: Could give him something Ten Hag can’t

If Frenkie de Jong’s projected deal to  Manchester United  falls through, Chelsea may try to steal him away from the Red Devils.

Erik ten Hag is determined to meet with his former Ajax starlet at the Theatre of Dreams three years after the pair reached the 2018-19 Champions League semi-finals.

De Jong has been Man United’s main goal throughout the transfer window, but the 20-time English champions have unable to agree on a fee with Barcelona.

Man United are claimed to have reached a “broad agreement” with La Blaugrana to sell De Jong, who will cost the Red Devils €65 million (£56.2 million) plus performance-related add-ons.

However, the transfer has yet to be completed because De Jong is yet to  sign his contract, despite reports that he does not want to leave Camp Nou for Old Trafford.

Late in the game, The Guardian  reports that Chelsea may try to entice De Jong to relocate to the capital if his move to Manchester United falls through.

Chelsea may try to entice De Jong to relocate to the capital if his move to Manchester United falls through.

According to the source, De Jong is interested in joining Ten Hag’s team, and Barcelona is willing to cash in given their severe need for funds.

Man United, on the other hand, are unable to deliver Champions League football, and Chelsea, who will be in Europe’s top division next season, could take advantage of De Jong’s desire for the competition that Man United are unable to offer.

The Netherlands international has 13 goals and 17 assists in 139 games with Barcelona, including four goals and five assists in 46 appearances last season.

De Jong has only won one Copa del Rey with Barcelona, who already have a ready-made successor in Franck Kessie, who is set to join on a free transfer from AC Milan.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is thought to be a fan of De Jong, as the Blues face an uncertain midfield scenario moving into the 2022-23 season due to the expiring contracts of Jorginho and N’Golo Kante.

Both have one year left on their contracts, and while Saul Niguez has returned to Atletico Madrid, Conor Gallagher will be competing for opportunities in the engine room.

De Jong might be a cheaper alternative to Declan Rice, who West Ham United insists is not for sale, but Tuchel is presently attempting to complete high-profile moves for attacking duo Raheem Sterling and Raphinha.

Defensive upgrades are also a priority for the current transfer window, with Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger leaving on free transfers, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso potentially joining them.

Chelsea is reportedly trying to entice Matthijs de Ligt away from Juventus, but they are also keeping an eye on PSG’s Presnel Kimpembe, who would not command De Ligt’s £103 million asking price.
