Chelsea could be about to sign ‘another Kevin De Bruyne,’ with Boehly given a second chance

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly may be about to atone for the club’s decision to release Kevin De Bruyne in 2014.

Comparisons between the Belgian and Arsen Zakharyan are already being made, with the Blues closing in on a deal for the Dynamo Moscow star.

Chelsea and their fans have had to live with the regret of letting De Bruyne leave Stamford Bridge eight years ago.

Jose Mourinho, who was in charge at the time, sanctioned his departure, with Wolfsburg paying less than £17 million to sign him permanently.

Less than two years later, De Bruyne moved to Manchester City for a fee of £55 million, where he has gone on to become a Premier League great.

The 31-year-old, who has twice been named PFA Players’ Player of the Year, continues to terrorise opposing defences with his powerful runs and incisive passes.

Many Chelsea fans have noticed those qualities in Zakharyan, whose agent has confirmed that a move to Stamford Bridge is imminent following a £12.6 million bid.

Last season, the 19-year-old scored 13 goals in 29 league games for Dynamo Moscow, which finished third in the table.

Zakharyan, who stands 6ft tall, is already a senior Russian international with the physicality and creativity to thrive in the Premier League.

Chelsea has signed a slew of teenage superstars this summer, and Zakharyan would be the latest.

Carney Chukwuemeka is a star for England’s youth teams, Omari Hutchinson was a standout in Arsenal’s academy, Cesare Casadei was a star at Inter Milan, and Gabriel Slonina was a 17-year-old regular between the posts at Chicago Fire.

Boehly is clearly focused on bolstering Chelsea’s crop of youngsters as well as a collection of established stars.

The Blues’ transfer spending has risen to over £180 million thanks to the likes of Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling, and Kalidou Koulibaly, and with Wesley Fofana and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang thought to be on the radar, they may not stop there.

“[Signing Fofana] does possibly make Chelsea ’s defence the strongest in the Premier League on paper,” said former Blues star Glen Johnson. “You’d have experience and youth as well as three athletes, so you’d struggle to get better than that.

“Chelsea should have bought Fofana years ago. I’m surprised he’s been at Leicester this long because a few years ago he was one of the best defenders around and he couldn’t even get in the French team.”
