Chelsea chief Todd Boehly makes Mason Mount contract decision after finding discussions ‘hard’

According to reports, Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has withdrawn from discussions with Mason Mount regarding a contract extension due to an inability to come to a satisfactory agreement.

Mount, who currently has less than 18 months remaining on his contract, is attracting interest from various Premier League clubs and could potentially depart Stamford Bridge during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Before Boehly and his associates took over Chelsea last year, Mount had already been engaged in talks with the club regarding a contract extension.

The midfielder is seeking a salary that is comparable to that of some of the new signings that have arrived at Stamford Bridge over the past year.

However, it seems that negotiations have been challenging for Boehly, and he may be reluctant to offer Mount the salary he desires.

According to a report by The Telegraph, Boehly was originally leading the negotiations with Mount but has since handed over the responsibility to co-sporting director Paul Winstanley and has recused himself from further talks.

Winstanley, who previously served as the Chief Scout at Brighton and Hove Albion, was appointed before the World Cup.

The negotiations have hit a roadblock, and there has been speculation that they could be postponed until the summer.

Mount has been absent from Chelsea’s recent resurgence under Graham Potter due to injury. Prior to the injury, he had been struggling to make an impact in the team and was left out of the starting lineup on several occasions.

Nevertheless, with his recovery progressing, he will be eager to make his return for Chelsea’s upcoming match against Everton on Saturday.

Mount’s return to the team may not be immediate, as Potter has established a winning combination in the last three matches. It is possible that he may initially be used as a substitute.

Despite this, Mount is aware that he has admirers from other top-flight clubs, such as Liverpool, Newcastle, and Manchester United, who could make a move for him if he decides to leave Chelsea.

Potter has acknowledged that the negotiations between Mount and Chelsea have become complicated, despite his initial statement that he would not interfere in the process.

“Ultimately it is between the club and Mason,” Potter said last week.

“I have spoken to him numerous times about his situation, football and life generally. My feelings for Mason are clear. He is a fantastic person firstly but sometimes these things happen.

“They are just complicated and it is best that I speak little about it, let them get on with it in deciding what is right for both parties.

“I am not naive. I know it is an important time for him and an important contract. These things have to be right for him and his family. It’s important he makes a decision on that basis.”
