Chelsea Breaks Premier League Record with Enzo Fernandez Signing
Chelsea has acquired Enzo Fernandez for a Premier League record fee.
The Blues have pursued the Benfica star for the duration of the transfer window, but the deal did not appear to be finalized until recent days.
In the last few days, however, the Blues’ apparent desire to pay the Portuguese club’s full asking price has accelerated the pace of the deal.
In the summer, Fernandez was acquired from River Plate for less than £15 million. He has become one of the most talked-about players in Europe after winning the World Cup with Argentina and the Young Player award.
The Times was among the first to report that Chelsea was prepared to pay a staggering £115 million for Fernandez, an Italian transfer guru. Fabrizio Romano stated that Chelsea desired the player “at all costs.”
Benfica insisted that Fernandez was not available for purchase, only for Chelsea to make their feelings known.
In the summer of 2021, Chelsea paid approximately £100 million to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge from Inter Milan.
Since Todd Boehly acquired the club last summer, Chelsea have been extremely active in the transfer market, and this winter has been no exception, with seven new arrivals.
Benoit Badiashile joined first, followed by David Datro Fofana and Andrey Santos. Joao Felix was loaned to London prior to the headline-grabbing acquisition of Mykhaylo Mudryk. Noni Madueke and Malo Gusto have also joined the defending Champions League champions.
Fernandez, who is only 22 years old, has joined the elite club of players who have sold for over £100 million. The remainder of the list consists of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho, Joao Felix, Antoine Griezmann, Jack Grealish, and Romelu Lukaku.
Fernandez is estimated by Transfermarkt to be worth €55 million.
