Chelsea braced for ‘nine departures’ as Wesley Fofana transfer deal set to spark mass exodus

Chelsea could lose nine players between now and the end of the summer transfer window as they refuse to give up on signing Wesley Fofana.

So far this summer, the Blues have spent heavily on Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Marc Cucurella.

Carney Chukwuemeka and Gabriel Slonina have also joined Chelsea’s future plans.

Timo Werner, Romelu Lukaku, Andreas Christensen, and Antonio Rudiger have all left Thomas Tuchel’s first-team squad from last season.

Many more have gone on loan, with Chelsea’s transfer window far from over.

As Tuchel looks to bolster his defensive options, Leicester star Fofana appears to be the next top target.

Chelsea has so far baulked at Leicester’s asking price and are unwilling to break Manchester United’s current record fee of £80 million for a central defender, which they paid for Harry Maguire.

Brendan Rodgers stated in his press conference on Thursday that there has been “nothing new” since last week.

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea haven’t given up hope yet, and signing the highly rated 21-year-old could spark a mass exodus at Stamford Bridge.

If Fofana is signed, the Blues will most likely want to balance the books, and there are also links to Frenkie de Jong and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Trevoh Chalobah is said to be ‘forced’ out of Chelsea if Fofana joins, while Ethan Ampadu is also expected to leave.

Marcos Alonso is still awaiting a move to Barcelona, despite the fact that personal terms have been agreed upon, due to the Catalan club’s financial situation.

Emerson Palmieri was set to sign with West Ham this week, but the deal fell through at the last minute.

Then there’s Billy Gilmour, Michy Batshuayi, Kenedy, Baba Rahman, and Ross Barkley, who aren’t in Tuchel’s plans for the season and want to leave the club.

Chelsea has frequently waited until the end of the transfer window to trim their squad for the season, previously waiting and hoping for permanent bids for their fringe players.

However, as the deadline approaches, Chelsea may be forced to accept loan offers in order to appease those players who want to leave.
