Bukayo Saka reveals why he took his England shirt off after Raheem Sterling’s goal vs the Czech Republic as Sterling heaps praise.

Bukayo Saka put in a man-of-the-match performance in England’s 1-0 victory over the Czech Republic on Tuesday night but there was one unique moment from the Arsenal player.

After Raheem Sterling scored – a goal Saka had been contributory in creating – the playmaker was picked up by television cameras taking his shirt off.

There was some blurring over precisely why he’d done that – taking your shirt off is usually reserved for the goalscorer – but Saka was actually merely taking off a thermal layer.

And he explained that he and his friends had been laughing at the mix-up.

“Hey, I was roasting,” Saka laughed in an interview with England channel Lions’ Den.

“It was so hot. I had my thermal on. Before that, H [Harry Kane] went down and I tried to take my thermal off.

“But I thought, what if someone does a quick free-kick and I’m running with my shirt off.

“So when we scored I just took it off quickly. But yeah the camera was on me and it looked a bit funny.

Following his remarkable display, Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling indicated that he was “buzzing” for Bukayo Saka after the Arsenal man’s extraordinary display during England’s 1-0 win over the Czech Republic at Wembley.

After producing an insipid and ordinary performance during the goalless draw with Scotland on Friday evening, England manager Gareth Southgate opted to shuffle his pack in a bid to reignite the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 hope.

“I thought Bukayo Saka was brilliant,” said Sterling, as quoted by BBC Sport. “I told him after the game that he got in the pockets of space, drove at people, he was direct and that’s what you need. It’s a credit to him.

“He’s tough, he’s funny, he gets on with everyone in the dressing room – I’m buzzing for him.”

The Arsenal starlet will now be expecting he has done enough to keep his spot in the side for next Tuesday’s round-of-16 match at Wembley.
