Bruno Fernandes breaks silence after Cristiano Ronaldo claims his goal; Portugal boss refuses to comment

Bruno Fernandes confessed that he initially thought Cristiano Ronaldo had scored the ninth goal of his career at the FIFA World Cup. However, Ronaldo was finally given credit for scoring the opening goal of a double that pushed Portugal into the knockout rounds of the Qatar 2022 tournament.

In the early minutes of the second half, a cross from Fernandes ended up in the back of the net for Uruguay, even though Ronaldo appeared to claim that he had tipped in his second goal of this tournament. In addition, Ronaldo’s old teammate from Manchester United, who was initially skeptical of Ronaldo’s antics, later stated: “I celebrated as if it had been Cristiano’s goal. It seemed to me that he had touched the ball. My aim was to cross the ball for him.

“We are happy with the victory regardless of who scored. The most important thing is that we achieved our aim which is to be in the next round.”

When asked about Ronaldo’s overall performance, the manager Fernando Santos refused to comment on the argument about the Fernandes first, but when asked about Ronaldo’s performance, he said:

“Ronaldo played a great game but all our team played a great performance.

“I think it was a great match, our team played very well and the rest for me does not matter.”

And Manchester City defender Ruben Dias added: “We know even though we have all the individuals in the world, if we don’t work together we won’t go anywhere. So this is a big example that we showed tonight.

“We are very happy we are moving forward to the next round. We must enjoy the moment.”

Ruben Neves expressed his hope that the Qatari authorities would show leniency toward the person who invaded the playing field during the second half of the match, which caused the game to be stopped.

The incident took place just a few minutes before Bruno Fernandes gave Portugal a 1-0 lead. The man who was holding the pride flag also had a t-shirt that bore the inscriptions “Save Ukraine” on the front and “Respect For Iranian Women” on the back. Both of these messages were written in Arabic.

“Of course, we are all with them and the message on his shirt as well,” the Wolves midfielder said.“We hope nothing happens to the boy because we understand his message and I think all the world understood it as well.

“We know what has happened around this World Cup. It is a normal thing that can happen.”
