Brighton manager makes Arsenal target Ballon d’Or claim amid Gunners rejected transfer bid

Brighton manager makes Arsenal target Ballon d’Or claim amid Gunners rejected transfer bid

Mykhaylo Mudryk, who is a January transfer target for Arsenal, has the ability to win the Ballon d’Or, according to former coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Mudryk’s consistent goal-scoring performance for Shakhtar Donetsk over the past two seasons has established him as one of the premier young attackers in international football.

After becoming a key member of De Zerbi’s squad last year, the 21-year-old has established himself as a consistent goal-scoring threat with 18 goal contributions this season.

The Gunners had a £55m bid with add-ons rejected earlier this week and are expected to make a higher offer for the 21-year-old when the transfer window reopens in January.

Before tonight’s (Saturday) Premier League match against the Gunners, De Zerbi was questioned about Mudryk, whom he managed during the 2021/22 season in Ukraine.

Despite having worked with Mudryk for only about six months as of February, when the Ukrainian season was cut short, the Italian coach has high hopes for the attacker.

“Mudryk is a fantastic player, but Brighton can’t buy him,” he said. “I like him, because I like all my ex-players. But Brighton can’t buy him, Arsenal, I don’t know.

“I think Mudryk can win the Ballon d’Or in the future. I know the value of Mudryk, he has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or.”

Shakhtar CEO Serhii Palkin informed the Gunners that the club is willing to sell Mudryk if an offer meets their valuation. He told Shakhtar’s website: “Negotiations are continuing. We receive offers, but they are not the ones we would like to see on our table.

“We are open to negotiations, ready to exchange ideas and figures. If we will agree, then let it be so. If we will not, then let it be another time.”

Arsenal manager Arteta opted to remain coy on his side’s interest in the 21-year-old on Friday. When asked about the player, he said: “I cannot talk about players that are not Arsenal.”
