Bournemouth manager Gary O’Neil expressed regret over a late missed opportunity as his team narrowly lost to Manchester United  at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

In the ninth minute of the match, United midfielder Casemiro scored the sole goal with an impressive overhead kick from a short distance, following a deflection off Marco Senesi’s boot from Christian Eriksen’s high pass.

Erik ten Hag’s team didn’t perform at their peak, but they defended effectively to secure the victory with three points.

Despite Bournemouth facing a solid defensive performance from Manchester United, they were able to create a few opportunities, with the most noteworthy chance falling to Kieffer Moore.

With just five minutes remaining, Moore broke through on goal but was denied by a save from David de Gea.

Additionally, Marco Senesi attempted a late volley from the edge of the box, which unfortunately landed on the roof of United’s net. Bournemouth manager Gary O’Neil expressed the belief that his team deserved a positive outcome from the match, considering their efforts.

“We were good, we gave everything in a close game,” O’Neil told Match of the Day after full-time. “We were right in it and had a big chance at the end. It is Manchester United and we had players missing.

“We want to treat every game with respect and give a good account of ourselves. David Brooks earned his right to start today, it’s not a friendly and we were very competitive. We deserved something from the game.

“For his first game back after such a long time David showed some great touches. Pre-season will be big for him but I’m delighted to have him back. He will be a good option for us next season.

“I am very proud of the group, it was a big mountain we had to climb. We achieved something that not many people thought we could.”

Manchester United’s victory at the Vitality Stadium has brought them close to securing a top-four finish. Meanwhile, Liverpool could only manage a draw in their home match against Aston Villa.

As a result, United now have a great opportunity to secure their place in the next season’s Champions League. Liverpool, on the other hand, can confirm their Champions League qualification by earning at least one point, or preferably three, in their upcoming home match against Chelsea on Thursday.
