Boost for Chelsea as Paul Pogba’s’ bust-up’ could hand a blow to Manchester United Raphael Varane’s pursuit.
The bust-ups after France’s disappointing defeat to Switzerland at Euro 2020 could cast doubt over Manchester United’s advanced signing of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.
The ruling World Cup holders floundered a 3-1 lead and succumbed to Switzerland on penalties, ending their dreams of winning back-to-back major trophies, and that reportedly created several internal quarrels between members of the squad.
It is believed that after yielding their third goal, many players accused each other of their lack of defensive effort, with Paul Pogba and Adrien Rabiot the renowned spat.
A day after the game, French media reported that Varane traded words with full-back Benjamin Pavard, while Pavard himself questioned Pogba’s work rate, which Varane reportedly backed up.
Apart from that, Rabiot’s mother, Veronique, who also acts as his representative, reportedly had strict words with the families of Pogba and Kylian Mbappe.
All of this has cast doubt on a possible move to Manchester United, where Pogba currently plays, for Varane, who seems settled on leaving Real Madrid this summer.

Varane joined Real Madrid in 2011 and with his deal lapsing next summer, he is keen on a move away this year having seen several player names and coach Zinedine Zidane leave in recent times.
Recent reports have hinted that Real Madrid want to talk to Varane directly, rather than with his management team, to try and persuade him to stay at the club, while Varane himself is not going to force a move and is willing to see out his contract.
There is also interest in the French defender from other clubs including United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea and French side Paris Saint-Germain.
Pogba, meanwhile, has been a topic of debate for United, as the club are looking to prolong his deal, which also expires next summer.
The French midfielder has played well at Euro 2020 and United will want to stretch his contract in order to not lose him on a free next year.
