Blow to Chelsea as Mason Mount rejects a £200,000-a-week contract with the Blues
Before departing for the World Cup, Mason Mount rejected a new deal at Chelsea worth more than £200,000 per week, a calculated gamble that might pay off spectacularly if he experiences a successful campaign.
Chelsea decided to pause negotiations for the duration of the tournament, but it is unlikely that there would be a quick resolution when they restart after the holidays, as the two parties remain far apart.
This gap could widen if Mount continues to perform as well as he did in England’s 6-2 victory over Iran.
Mount’s agents are rumored to be demanding a salary comparable to that of Raheem Sterling, who signed a £300,000-per-week deal with Manchester City last summer.
The proposals made by Chelsea to Mount have been much lower. The Blues had intended to reach an agreement quickly when they began contract talks with Mount and Reece James in September, but while the defender agreed to a new six-year deal earning £250,000 per week, negotiations with his teammate have dragged on.
Mount’s apparent unwillingness to sign is concerning for Chelsea, considering he has only 18 months remaining on his contract. This will reduce his transfer value despite Liverpool and Juventus’ interest.
The 23-year-old is one of the lowest-paid players in Graham Potter’s squad, earning around £85,000 per week, due to the fact that he has not signed a contract since shortly after returning from a loan spell at Derby three years ago, when he had yet to establish himself as a Chelsea first-team regular.
