‘Big mistake,’ Antonio Conte has already questioned Chelsea ahead of l London derby clash

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has already questioned why many pundits and rival fans are writing Chelsea off as a title contender ahead of this early-season London derby.

Many have predicted that the Blues’ fortunes will only worsen now that Roman Abramovich has left the club after a highly successful 19-year trophy-laden tenure.

Todd Boehly, a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, will now steer the ship in his Clearlake Capital consortium.

It’s been a takeover that manager Thomas Tuchel has only spoken positively about, and their actions this summer have sent shockwaves to Chelsea’s top four rivals.

So far this summer, Boehly and company have spent around £170 million on five new hires.

Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Marc Cucurella are among the stars, with two more on the way.

Spending is expected to exceed £300 million, with three more signings expected before the September deadline.

It’s the kind of ambition that would propel Chelsea into a title race with Manchester City, Liverpool, and Tottenham.

Conte will not rule it out, despite the fact that most people do not consider Tuchel’s team to be serious contenders for the Premier League title in 2022/23.

“But I think you forgot Chelsea. This is a big, big mistake. You are talking about a team who two seasons ago won the Champions League,” the Italian boss said in his pre-match press conference ahead of the first Southampton game. “

“It is a really big squad, last season they won the World Cup for clubs. Why is Chelsea not in this group of top teams? For me Chelsea are in this group and they want to stay there and they deserve to be considered in this position.”

It’s easy to forget that the Blues also won against the Lilywhites four times last season.

Twice in the Premier League and two  times in the EFL Carabao Cup.

Despite the north Londoners’ improvement from the previous season, their West London counterparts’ record in this game probably tilts the pendulum in their favor.

Both teams come into this match on the back of opening-day victories, with Chelsea edging Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park and Tottenham easily dispatching Southampton at home.

It’s set to be a titanic battle at Stamford Bridge, with the winner indicating who of the two is the most likely candidate to challenge the status quo this season at the top of the league.
