Belgium legend reveals why Chelsea hero Eden Hazard flopped at Real Madrid
Marc Desgryse, a Belgian hero, believes Eden Hazard overestimated his big-money move from Chelsea to Real Madrid.
Hazard left Chelsea in 2019 after seven years at the club, during which he won two Premier League titles and numerous individual awards.
The tricky winger’s Madrid career has been marred by injuries and poor form, with the 30-year-old currently on a 10-match goalless streak for Carlo Ancelotti’s team.
Hazard’s biggest issue, according to Desgryse, was showing up overweight to his first ever training session at Los Blancos.
“Incomprehensible. I still don’t understand it today. That he came to the first training with 7 kilos overweight,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws.
“It doesn’t matter if they were five. How do you do that? Gain five kilos in three weeks. It’s hard to understand that you start preparing like this.
“Then he started training at the same pace as the other players, but that is not possible. First you have to get rid of those extra kilos.
“As a result, he immediately suffered a muscle injury. And then he rejoined without having laid the foundations of a good season.
“He seriously underestimated Real Madrid.”
Hazard, according to the former Anderlecht and Club Brugge forward, should leave the Bernabeu in January in order to revitalize his career.
Newcastle are said to be interested in signing the Belgian international, a move that is supported by Desgryse.
“Hazard has to go to a team in January where they count on him, where they make him important,” he added.
“Newcastle is ideal. All the balls will go to him. If he can keep Newcastle in the Premier League, it could give a new boost to his career.”
