Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund & PSG set deadlines for joining Super League.

Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and PSG are among the top European giants who haven’t agreed on joining the ESL. The three clubs have now been set a deadline to join the Super League if they wish to do so.

With the news of the formation of this new competition confirmation on Monday, 12 elite clubs are already in, with the Premier League’s big six clubs together with the three richest clubs from Spain and Italy confirming their memberships.

The drafters of the tournament now want Bayern and PSG as well as Borussia Dortmund to sign up and complete a 15-team cabal of founding members.

According to the new document released by Der Spiegel, it has been revealed that Bayern Munich and Dortmund have been given 30 days to accept that invitation.

PSG, however, has a short duration to decide, with the club only given a fortnight, and must decide whether they will take part by Sunday 3 May.

To this point, it appears like all three clubs are against the idea of signing up for ESL. Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has already replaced Juventus’ Andrea Agnelli on the board of the European Club Association, which signifies the club’s position to remain in the Champions League next season.

German football is usually heavily fan-oriented. Ticket prices in the Bundesliga are dwarfed by some of those in La Liga and English Premier League, while the 50+1 rule ensures at least 51% of clubs’ shares are retained by the fans. This gives a clear reason as to why Borrusis Dortmund are reluctant to commit to the new outfit.

PSG omission from the list of clubs who have approved the Super League comes as a surprise, but their president Nasser Al-Khelaifi stands alongside UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin in opposing the new breakaway idea.

Nasser Al-Khelaifi is the president of beIN Sport, a company that is one of the broadcasting organization and have invested heavily in the Champions League which is under threat by the new Super League competition.

It is however not clear exactly what will happen if the three clubs fail to meet their deadline in accepting the invitation. There are already reports of the Super League, chaired up by Los Blancos Florentino Perez, reaching out to Portuguese side FC Porto, who have rejected the chance to join.

More clubs will be invited but the hostile reception the competition has received by fan groups could cause clubs to think twice about jumping aboard.
