Australian football on shock after award winning former Chelsea soccer star’s wife dies in Australia

The tragic death of Macarthur FC captain Ulises Dávila’s wife Lily has shocked Australian football.

On Monday, the Bulls issued a brief statement acknowledging Lily’s passing and expressing their condolences.

“The club would like to express its heartfelt condolences to Uli, Uli Jnr and the extended family during this difficult time,” the statement read.

The 31-year-old former Mexican international and Chelsea footballer is one of the biggest stars in the Australian A-League, and he and his late wife had a child, Uli Jnr.

Several other A-League Men’s clubs, including newly crowned winners Western United, have since expressed their astonishment and grief at the news on social media.

The Wellington Phoenix expressed their sadness at the news.

“Uli & his whānau will always be a part of ours,” the club wrote on Phoenix.

“We would like to send our deepest condolences to Uli & his family during this tough time.”

Davila has become a tremendously popular figure in the ALM since joining the Wellington Phoenix in 2019.

The Mexican spent two seasons with the New Zealand-based club, sharing the 2021 Johnny Warren Medal with Sydney FC’s Milos Ninkovic after scoring 12 goals and assisting five times for the Phoenix in 2020-21.

Davila signed a three-year contract with Macarthur ahead of the 2021-22 season and was named captain shortly after.

Davila finished the 2021-22 season as Macarthur FC’s leading goal scorer and was awarded the members’ player of the year.

He scored seven goals in a season marred by injury and Covid-19, as the Bulls fell short of the playoffs.
