Arteta approves shock Arsenal move as Tottenham right-back Serge Aurier ‘open to a move to rivals Arsenal after terminating his contract by mutual consent’

Tottenham right-back Serge Aurier is searching for a new club after securing a mutual close of his Tottenham deal.

Sky Sports claim that Aurier ‘wants to stay in England’. On top of that, ‘Arsenal are one of several clubs that have been made aware of his preference’ and the Ivorian ‘would consider’ crossing the north London divide.

There is no sign that the feeling is mutual. Takehiro Tomiyasu moved to Arsenal on deadline day and the center-half can fill in at right-back so Mikel Arteta might deem that as a position not worth reinforcing.

But Ekrem Konur of Calcio In Pillole and Fichajes seems to believe Arteta has approved a proposed deal and the Gunners will ‘start talks’ in due course.

Never heard of the guy, pretty sure one of those outlets is made up and the other has a lousy reputation for this sort of thing, but he has a tick on Twitter so #WelcomeAurier. He probably already has the Arsenal shirt anyway.

The right back told Spurs of his plan to bequeath the club last summer but was unable to find a fitting move before the end of the transfer window.

Consequently, both parties agreed to end his deal, which was due to expire at the end of the season, early.

Aurier has had links with Arsenal in the past, after he tweeted a picture of himself wearing a Gunners shirt during his time at Toulouse in 2013. The post was later deleted.

Arsenal signed right back Takehiro Tomiyasu on deadline day while Cedric Soares and Calum Chambers are other options at Mikel Arteta’s disposal.

Announcing the Ivory Coast star’s exit, Tottenham said: ‘The Club can confirm the departure of Serge Aurier following the mutual termination of his contract.

‘We thank Serge for his service and wish him well for the future.’

The 28-year-old paid tribute to the club upon his exit – thanking the fans for their support but said he was ready for the next chapter of his career.

He said: ‘I have really enjoyed my time at Spurs and would like to thank the Club and the fans, but I feel now is the right time for me to move onto a new challenge.’
