Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale shares amusing nickname he has been given amid England omission
Aaron Ramsdale, the Arsenal goalkeeper, has revealed that Kieran Trippier began calling him ‘Boris’ during Euro 2020.
The stopper, who joined Arsenal from Sheffield United this summer, has impressed in his first few weeks.
He has impressed in goal since replacing Bernd Leno as Mikel Arteta’s first choice, and his performances appear to have caught Gareth Southgate’s attention, as Ramsdale has been named to the England squad.
He will certainly hope that a nickname coined by former Tottenham Hotspur defender Kieran Trippier does not resurface.
Talking to England’s First Impressions YouTube show, he said: “I’ve got Rammers and Rambo. Trips [Kieran Tripper] thought it was a good idea to call me Boris in the Euros. That hasn’t caught on.
“That was in the summer so I think he’s forgot which is really, really good for me.”
The comparisons to the current UK Prime Minister may stem from Ramsdale’s very similar bleach blonde hair, but a comparison to a reptile made by his former club is surely worse – despite having a very good reason.
Ramsdale continued: “And then Sheff United lads called me lizard.
“If you ever see me doing anything, I’ll have my tongue out. Any concentration, my tongue is out. Rammers and Rambo are my nicknames which I prefer people call me.”
Ramsdale has made seven appearances for Arsenal since joining the club this summer, recording five clean sheets.
He was left on the bench for the Three Lions’ match against Andorra in favor of Sam Johnstone, but he will hope to earn a starting spot against Hungary next week.
