Arsenal replies to “very interesting” transfer chief Edu offers
Arsenal has began contract negotiations with the club’s technical director, Edu, despite intense competition from European teams.
The 44-year-old was promoted two years ago following Raul Sanllehi’s departure and has been instrumental in a near-total revamp of the club’s first team roster.
Together with Mikel Arteta, the Brazilian has assisted in slashing the team’s escalating pay cost and lowering the average age of the squad to the point that it is currently one of the youngest in the Premier League.
Before last week’s Europa League match against PSV Eindhoven, Arteta was asked about Edu’s future.
Arteta said: “It is a question for him but from what I know he is fully committed.”
Edu was instrumental in brokering the moves that brought Fabio Vieira, Gabriel Jesus, and Oleksandr Zinchenko to north London in the summer, giving Arsenal a roster capable of sustaining a top-four campaign.
According to the Daily Mail, the work of the club’s former midfielder has received interest from at least two European clubs, with sources describing the interest as “quite exciting.”
Arsenal is reportedly in negotiations with the 44-year-old in an effort to ensure his future so he can complete his reconstruction project.
In light of this, Arsenal will provide Arteta with a £50 million transfer budget during the January transfer window in order to further boost a team that has been stretched to the breaking point during the October timetable.
Despite Sunday’s draw at Southampton, Arsenal maintains a two-point lead in the Premier League, but Arteta is concerned about the pressure placed on Bukayo Saka in particular.
The Gunners will try to sign a new winger when the transfer window reopens after failing to get Pedro Neto, Raphinha, or Mykhaylo Petrovych Mudryk in the summer.
A new central midfielder is also considered as a priority due to concerns over Thomas Partey’s durability, and the club may revive its interest in Palmeiras’ Brazilian international Danilo.
Arsenal attempted to acquire another Brazilian, Douglas Luiz, on the final day of the transfer window, but the Aston Villa star signed a new long-term contract last week.
