Arsenal register shock interest in Atletico Madrid player
Arsenal are interested in Matheus Cunha, according to Fichajes
The Gunners are said to be interested in bolstering their offensive options in the upcoming January transfer window, with the Atletico Madrid star emerging as a possible target.
However, they will face competition in their pursuit of Cunha, who is valued at more than €30 million.
Matheus Cunha joined Atletico Madrid for €26 million in the summer. He was brought in to add competition to Diego Simeone’s attacking unit after excelling during his previous spell at Hertha Berlin.
Unfortunately for the Brazilian, Atletico also signed Antoine Griezmann on deadline day, while Rodrigo de Paul was signed from Udinese earlier in the summer.
It has, predictably, made life difficult for Cunha, who has fallen behind in the Atleti pecking order this season.
Atletico Madrid may be willing to sanction the sale of Cunha, knowing that the attacker has no future at the club.
The player also has a contract until 2026, giving Los Colchoneros the opportunity to recoup their summer investment.
Arsenal’s chase of Matheus Cunha comes as no surprise given the club’s need for attacking reinforcements during the upcoming January transfer window.
The Gunners have done well to recover from a poor start to the season, but they have struggled to create chances on a consistent basis.
Cunha could be a valuable addition to the team in this regard. The Brazilian can provide much-needed competition in the final third, and his versatility in particular will be a huge asset for Mikel Arteta.
Cunha is, in fact, primarily a number ten.
He can, however, play out wide and even as a central striker, making him a viable option not only for Martin Odegaard or Nicolas Pepe, but also for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Furthermore, the Brazilian international can provide trickery and dynamism in the final third, constantly challenging opposing defenses.
It could be extremely useful, especially given the success of players like Raheem Sterling and Raphinha in the Premier League, implying Cunha could be a wise option for Arsenal this January.
