Arsenal fear ‘heavy Martin Odegaard blow’ after report coming out from PSG. Captain to leave in the summer
Reports suggest that Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is contemplating the possibility of recruiting Martin Odegaard, the midfielder from Arsenal, as a potential replacement for Lionel Messi, who is a World Cup champion.
Arsenal acquired Odegaard on a permanent basis in 2021 after a short loan period at the Emirates. The total cost of the transfer, including additional payments, could reach approximately £35 million. While some individuals initially questioned Arsenal’s decision to purchase Odegaard from Real Madrid, he has proven to be an exceptional acquisition for the Premier League powerhouse.
Odegaard’s mandate as Arsenal’s new captain at the beginning of this season has been transformative for the 24-year-old. Throughout the season, he has been one of the top performers in the Premier League, having scored 15 goals and provided seven assists.
Martin Odegaard, the Norwegian international, is currently under contract with Arsenal until 2025. Recent reports from The Evening Standard indicate that Arsenal is considering offering him a new deal to secure his long-term future at the club.
However, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, PSG is interested in acquiring Odegaard and is willing to make a significant financial investment to secure his signature.
PSG views Odegaard as an appealing option and is evaluating potential signings for the upcoming summer transfer window.
‘The possible departure of Odegaard worries Arsenal’ as it is rightly believed that his departure would be a ‘heavy blow’ and it ‘would force the club to look for a quality replacement.’
Another report from Nacional suggests that Martin Odegaard has received two proposals, with the first one coming from PSG. Odegaard is seen as a top candidate to fill the void left by Lionel Messi, who is expected to depart PSG when his contract expires this summer.
PSG is even prepared to offer a sum exceeding 65 million euros to acquire Odegaard. However, Bayern Munich has also expressed interest in signing him and has entered the race for his signature, as mentioned in the report.
‘Thomas Tuchel is convinced that he would be an excellent reinforcement and that it is worth paying whatever is necessary to open the exit doors for him at the Emirates Stadium.’
Gary Neville, a Manchester United legend, has made a bold statement suggesting that Martin Odegaard is one of the players who has had a negative impact on Arsenal’s recent struggles. Neville believes that Odegaard’s performances have played a part in the difficulties that Arsenal has faced in recent weeks.
“I look at Martin Odegaard, fantastic professional. Oleksandr Zinchenko, great professional. But when you actually get to the highest pressurised moments in the biggest matches in the crux of the season, are they leaders then?” Neville said on The Overlap.
“Arsenal’s senior players, Partey, Zinchenko, Odegaard, in the most difficult period – when those younger players like Saka and Martinelli needed that guidance, Jesus needed telling to stop running around and just stand up front and be really disciplined in how you play – they didn’t impact the rest of their teammates on the pitch, I don’t believe. In fact, they contributed to the difficulties they were having in the matches.
