Arsenal eyeing Pep Guardiola’s unwanted Ligue 1 star to address Mikel Arteta’s midfield conundrum

Arsenal have been very active in the summer transfer season, most recently signing FC Porto midfielder Fabio Vieira.

The midfield additions should not stop there, since the Gunners still require a more defensive midfielder, which could be Edu’s thinking.

According to the French newspaper  L’Equipe, Paris Saint-Germain have held conversations with Lens about signing Seko Fofana.

Newcastle and Arsenal are also rumoured to be interested in the midfielder.

The Gunners still need to bolster their midfield before the transfer market closes.

Mikel Arteta would be wise to sign Fofana ahead of the upcoming season.

Youri Tielemans appeared to be the ideal target for Arsenal to upgrade their midfield, but this is reportedly no longer the case.

According to Sky Sports, Arteta’s team has ‘cooled’ its interest in Tielemans.

According to the source, the Belgium international is increasingly likely to sign a one-year contract extension at the King Power Stadium, with his current term scheduled to expire in a year.

With an alternative to Tielemans required, the Gunners have a fantastic opportunity to clinch a move for Ivory Coast midfielder Fofana

The Ivorian has previously played for a Premier League club.

Fofana joined Manchester City from Lorient in 2013, where he was part of the club’s youth group.

He left the Citizens in 2016, during Pep Guardiola’s first season as manager, to join Udinese.

However, it is during his stay at Lens that he has excelled and demonstrated his quality.

Last season, the Ivorian started every league game as his team made a surprise push for Champions League qualification before falling just short.

The 27-year-old scored 12 goals in 41 games, demonstrating his ability to play as a box-to-box midfielder, which will be important for the Gunners next season.

Arteta lacked a goal threat in midfield, and Fofana could easily fill that role.

Mikel Arteta struggled in the midfield last season due to a lack of quality in the squad depth, which hampered the club’s progress at times.

If the Spaniard opts for three players in the centre of midfield, Fofana would be a good long-term option on the left side.

With Tielemans obviously out of the picture, Arsenal must hunt for another midfielder before the season begins in August. Over the last two seasons, Fofana has demonstrated that he would be an excellent replacement.
