Arsenal disallowed goal named among six VAR blunders in Premier League this season

Arsenal disallowed goal named among six VAR blunders in Premier League this season

According to reports, the disallowed goal scored by Arsenal against Manchester United at Old Trafford in September is one of six errors made by VAR in the Premier League this season.

Gabriel Martinelli’s early goal versus United was overturned by VAR after Martin Odegaard’s gentle challenge on Christian Eriksen was considered a foul and brought to the attention of referee Paul Tierney.

However, ESPN reports that an independent panel consisting of three former players and one representative each from the Premier League and PGMOL later reviewed the decision and determined that the goal should have been awarded.

“In my opinion, it’s never a foul,” Odegaard said of the decision after Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat to United. “The referee sees it and plays play on.

“It’s a soft challenge and for VAR to come in it has to be clear and obvious. That’s been said a lot of times.

“On the camera, you can always make it look a little bit worse, but, for me, that was never a foul so it’s frustrating.”

Maxwel Cornet’s late equalizer for West Ham at Stamford Bridge was mistakenly disallowed due to Jarrod Bowen’s challenge on Edouard Mendy in the build-up, resulting in a VAR error for Chelsea.

Douglas Luiz’s red card for violent conduct against Aleksandar Mitrovic of Fulham was also one of the six VAR errors, and Aston Villa were able to overturn the midfielder’s three-game suspension.

Tyrick Mitchell’s own goal, which was disallowed due to a foul committed by Newcastle United player Joe Willock on Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita in the build-up, was another VAR error identified by the independent panel.

The penalty awarded to Brentford versus Nottingham Forest for a foul by Dean Henderson on Yoane Wissa is now regarded a VAR error.

In addition, Lucas Digne’s handball that resulted in a penalty during Aston Villa’s 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace in August has been declared a VAR error.
