Antonio Conte forced to clarify remarkable rant by Daniel Levy and Tottenham board after finding himself in trouble with his North London employers
Following Tottenham’s 3-3 draw with Southampton, their coach Antonio Conte was required to clarify the controversial statements he made. Despite being 3-1 up at one point, the team only managed to secure a draw, and after the match, Conte expressed his anger towards his players and even the club management.
In a tense press conference, the former Inter Milan and Chelsea manager stated that both the club and its coaches were responsible for the transfer market, and he also questioned the whereabouts of the players.
“Twenty years there is the owner and they never won something but why? The fault is only for the club, or for every manager that stay here?
“You are finding an alibi, another alibi. You try to find an excuse for the players. OK, continue to do this, to find an excuse for the players. You do only this! You do only this.
“Excuses for the players. ‘But the players, maybe, my future, then we lost confidence, they lost spirit, they lost being a team’. Excuses. Excuses. Excuses. Try to protect them every time.”
Conte’s remarks have reportedly caused some trouble for him with Tottenham chairman Levy.
However, as per Sky Sports, the Italian clarified to the club’s board that his statements were not intended to be a critique of the club’s management.
Instead, he was solely targeting the players and questioning why they were not receiving more criticism. Despite this incident, there are currently no plans for Spurs to replace their coach. The players and staff are currently on a two-day break and will resume training on Tuesday.
While it seems that Conte will remain with the team for now, his future with the club beyond the short-term looks uncertain.
Antonio Conte’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and there are currently no indications that he will sign a new deal anytime soon.
Following his comments and Tottenham’s draw against Southampton, former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher suggested that Conte may have been intentionally seeking to be fired from his position.
“Conte wants to be sacked in this international break,” he wrote on Twitter. “Spurs should just put him out of his misery and do it tonight.”
Despite their draw against Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur is still in the fourth position in the Premier League table. However, they are now only seven points ahead of eighth-placed Brentford, who have played one game less than Spurs.
