Anthony Taylor shares why Victor Lindelof not sent off for Son foul in Tottenham vs Man Utd
Tottenham suffered a humiliating 6-1 defeat by Newcastle United which led to the end of Cristian Stellini’s brief tenure as manager. As a result, the team needed a morale boost, which interim manager Ryan Mason received from his players, despite some initial difficulties.
On Thursday night, Spurs hosted Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, hoping to secure their second victory in six games as they struggled to qualify for the Champions League.
Unfortunately, things started badly for Spurs, as they conceded a goal to Jadon Sancho within the first ten minutes of the game. Although they managed to recover, Marcus Rashford dealt them a severe blow by scoring a second goal just before halftime.
At halftime, Mason had a challenging task ahead of him, but he rose to the occasion and guided the team to a remarkable comeback from a 2-0 deficit.
Tottenham managed to salvage a 2-2 draw, with Pedro Porro’s excellent strike and a goal from Son Heung-min.
Throughout the game, Tottenham had numerous opportunities to score a third goal and secure a win, but they were unable to convert those chances into goals. As a result, they had to settle for a draw and split the points with Manchester United.
The outcome of the game might have been different if Manchester United had received a red card.
During the match, when the score was 2-1 and with 18 minutes remaining, Son attempted to turn and advance forward around 35 yards from the goal. Victor Lindelof, who had already received a yellow card, grabbed and brought down Son, resulting in a foul.
Despite Tottenham captain Harry Kane expressing his opinion, referee Anthony Taylor did not give a red card to Lindelof.
The reason for this decision was that United substitute Fred was nearby, and Taylor explained this to Kane.
From lip-reading the referee, it appears that Taylor said four words to Kane: “He’s going into Fred.” This explanation might not have been comforting for Tottenham or their fans, but the referee had a valid point.
